• I got a tattoo 3 days ago, and it’s so painful to touch, is this normal?

It’s not overly red or swollen but the pain when i try to put my vitamin e ointment on it is BAD. . . i’m not sure why it doesnt LOOK infected, but i’m still nervous. It’s on the inside of my left leg from the ankle to halfway up my calf.

Yes, it is an open wound right now. Just continue to clean it as normal and it should begin to scab up next week then it will flake. Then you know its fully healed.

Is it hot to touch? I think you might want to go to the doctor and see if you need antibiotics (not just the creaml) I have 4 tattoos and none of them hurt at all after maybe an hour at most.

If you are concerned, contact your tattoo artist. If that doesn’t help, see your doctor.

that’s okay, its gonna be a bit sore for a few days, if it doesn’t look infected then its not – infected would be red, raised or swollen, hot and irritated, and pussing maybe. . . . .
wash in cool water to not aggravate and lighty pat the ointment on.
Good luck, let us know how it does in a couple days!

call the shop where you had the work done, and let them know and see what they say, but I can tell you I have over sixty hours of tattooing on my body all over and none of them hurt after they were done, maybe just a little warm and red for a few hours after wards.

      Yes, that is very common. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . feels like a bad sunburn,
      doesn’t it?
There’s nothing to worry about. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . and no, it won’t heal in a week or two. It will take at least a month to be completely healed. You may think that it is, by looking at it, but it’s not, it will still be “working” inside.
. . . . . . you can stop using your moisturizer at that point and if you go in the sun, use sunblock.
In the mean time, don’t soak it in water, take showers not baths, stay out of swimming pools, chlorine will take color out,
lakes, streams, creeks, and ponds have bacteria in them and you don’t want to take the chance of infection.
If your tattooist did a good job, and you take care of it properly
      you shouldn’t have a problem.
Have you ever gotten a tat from this place before?
If not, I would really consider that you go somewhere else for
      your next one. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . just to be on the safe side.

      take care,good luck, and enjoy

a lot of the time the pain is from where the artist stretched the skin. You are still a little bruised. Nothing to worry about.

    • bernman101 says:

you might want to clean it and then put on some anti bacterial ointment to make sure it does not get infected. . . .

    • janelle says:

put cocoa butter on it. prevents drying and cracking also don’t apply pressure. my moms hurt for a while to and it was a little red try not to get it sunburnt to avoid fading and irritation

    • Adrianne R says:

It’s going to hurt depending on how fast you’ll heal could take a week.

    • etrigone says:

Sounds like all of my tattoo work so far. I’m also pretty pale, so it looks red even longer on me. People freak when they see me work out, since lack of coloration means I look very red trivially regardless of my physical condition.

The touch sensitivity drops over the first week or so, and I’m normally okay by day 7-10 even if the flaking skin still abounds. As long as it’s improving over that time period I’m pretty sure you’re okay.

I suspect that if you really want some face to face confirmation – and don’t feel too bad about that – your artist won’t have a problem taking a look at it.

      No Worries
If it isn’t red, or swollen,
      It sounds pretty normal.
      Just follow your after care
      instructions. If you feel
like your going to panic. .
      call your artist.
You just had a pretty large
      area poked a billion times.
Think back on how it felt,
      when you skinned your knee.
      It’s gonna hurt some, worry
you some, then scab up and heal.
Try to relax and just take care of it.
