Errr, because they want to look stupid, while at the same time think they look cool and unique, just like all of their friends. Just another way of saying “ooo, look at me, I’m such a rebel, I don’t conform to societal norms. . . “. Kids have done stupid stuff throughout history, it’ll pass. There have been times when long hair on males was unacceptable, and fashionable in a rebellious sense, along with male ear piercing. (As I understand it, cops think it’s quite amusing, when they’re chasing a suspect who can’t run fast because his pants are falling down)

I think it looks absolutely awful. I really don’t understand the need to show underwear off in that way. I really don’t care if they’ve bought their underwear from D & G or flippin Primark. The urge to hoist them up really gets to me and I have to stop myself.

On blokes it is a sign of sloppy dressing and wearing trousers that are too tight around the waist so they need to pull them down below the beer belly. They buy size 38 waist when they really need size 42. Now when nice looking young (in their 20′s) girls wear them like this and they has a nice figure with nice shapely breasts then there is nothing to beat it. Just as long as the top of the thong or knickers do not show. This is when there is just too much on show.

It’s that type of fashion, it’s been there since last year, my cousins from london wear they’re jeans and trakkie bottoms like that the whole summer long, i can’t make sense of it as i’d think it would be uncomfortable but that’s what they like. Everyone to their own. .

Don’t mind a really hot bum on view but today I was having my lunch and a fat 30′ish bird sat near me with her back to me. The crack of her bum cleavage was very apparent, no sign of underwear, and was not very pretty. Put me right off my lunch. But can you say anything? not really.

Thanks for asking this. I’ve been meaning to ask such a question for some time but keep forgetting to do so.
It is of course intended to identify the wearer as being part of a group that consider themselves to be ‘hip’ or ‘cool’, or whatever the current phrase is.
Needles to say of course, it actually makes the wearer look quite the opposite to most people of even below average intelligence. In fact they look stupid. Incapable of even the simple tasks of dressing themselves completely without their mummy to pull their pants up for them.
Of course young people have always tried to show their rebellious nature by dressing outlandishly (remember Teddy Boys, and Mods and Rockers), but most people only take part in this role play stuff when they are teenagers, and they then grow up somewhat and forsake the childish activities except for occassional fancy dress parties etc.
The puzzling thing about this custom of wearing trousers pulled so low that it exposes underpants, is that grown men are also wearing their trousers like this also. It is not at all unusual to see a black guy (who is quite obviously 30 or more, walking or shopping with what I assume is his family (wife or partner and children) How or why any mentally normal adult male should want to be associated with such a group of morons I simply cant figure.
Some other facets of this phenominom are the custom of wearing what we used to call basketball caps, with the peak at the back or over one ear. This is presumably to convey the idea that the wearer is a fun person.
This of course is usually proved wrong as the wearer is inevitably arrogant, aggressive, rude, ignorant, and violent.
Lastly there is also the totally stupid ‘Pimp Walk’. I have no real idea of what that is supposed to convey to anyone, but it always looks to me that the person involved is in some way crippled for some reason and therefore has a limp when he walks.
It is a great shame that many black people have fought for years to get TV and Film Companies to stop portraying them with stereotypes such as ‘The Black and White Minstrels, or ‘Step and Fetchit’, and yet these types of images are now being paraded by members of their own communities.
I understand that the droopy trouser fashion came about through young Afro Caribbian boys trying to emulate prisoners in American jails, who were invariably issued with a sort of one size garment. They were also prevented from having belts presumably to avoid possible suicides.
Some of this problem may be atributable to problems with society as a whole. But surely most of the problem must come from within their own communities.
Of course these daft fashions are no longer restricted to Afro Carribian boys as whites and Asian boys are now beginning to follow suit.

Maybe it’s an issue of ill-conceived projection. These guys are titillated by glimpses of a lacy edge of a bra at a gal’s neckline, or a thong showing over the top of a gal’s hiphuggers. Thus, they reason, the ladies would be equally titillated by a view of male undies. And, just as they would by thrilled by a bigger glimpse of a bra or thong and the goodies underneath, they assume that the more exposure, the better. Whaddya think?
Apparently it goes back to the chain gangs, when the convicts belts were confiscated, so their trousers hung round their hips. I was told it’s a statement, Hmmm.

In addition to what Jacyinby said about it emulating american prisoners, I heard the same, that is comes from American prisons – but not because of sizing issues, but in fact that the lads with their jeans so low were to indentify themselves to other prisoners as ‘available’ for hire!
